Socially Distant Improv was created on March 13, 2020 and started out as an Instagram account for the sole purpose of giving our friends a platform to perform during the NYC quarantine. Within seven days, the account had exploded to close to 1,000 followers and was suddenly streaming 25+ shows a week. Now, after six months of growth, we are proud to stream over 50 original shows every week to over 3,000 followers.
Our shows range from kid friendly content - like our FamProv Jamprov at 11am ET every Saturday which features co-founder Dana Shulman with her niece and nephew in the first half, and another family somewhere in the world in the second half - to featuring long-running independent improv teams such as Off Top and Student Driver - to character shows, like Sally O’Malley’s Character Workout, or music inspired shows, like The Rust Brothers and Shut Up and Play the Hits!, and even late night stand up featuring headliners such as Myq Kaplan and Christiana Jackson.
Right now, during these difficult times, we wanted to help give performers a sense of normalcy among the chaos... to have a place they could perform and give people the opportunity to tune in, laugh, and be distracted, even just for a few minutes. More than anything, we wanted to create something for comedy nerds, by comedy nerds, and we’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished in such a short time. So please, check us out, write to us, pitch us a show! We want you to be a part of this wild little experiment.
We know an online platform will never replace the good old fashioned shows at our favorite brick and mortar locations all over the world; but for now, until we're back, we've got your back...from a safe distance.
